Description |
Rectangular cardboard display board mounted with three posters from the Documentary Photo Aids (DPA) series entitled, "DPA Immigration Series", and three DPA posters from unknown series. The posters are numbered 34, 49, 33, and 40. The numbers for two posters are not visible. The posters consist of black and white photographic images with a caption below. The first poster is a 1954 photograph of a group of children saluting the flag at a naturalization ceremony, the second is a c.1902 photograph of a street scene in New York's Lower East Side, the third is two photographs of groups of non-citizens taking an oath of allegiance and completing paperwork under the Alien Registration Act, the fourth is a 1940 photograph of a sign for reduced rent in Memphis, Tennessee, the fifth is photographs of Enrico Caruso, Wanda Landowska, and Lauritz Melchior, and the sixth is a c.1900 photograph of child laborers in a textile factory. The front of the board is covered in wood design contact paper and clear plastic which is taped at the back. Handwritten in red ink on the back of the board is "6 of 7 / Immigration" and in black ink, "F. Immigration / (1882-1950)". This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
