Description |
Dollhouse of Robert H. Robinson Library made by Linwood Smith and Sharon Jones Frazier. This dollhouse is a model of the Robert Robinson Library, 638 North Alfred Street, Alexandria. The segregated library was constructed in 1940, following the August 21, 1939 sit-in at the Alexandria Library, organized by local attorney Samuel Wilbert Tucker. The Robert H. Robinson Library building is now a gallery space within the Alexandria Black History Museum. The dollhouse is furnished with a central desk, two tables with chairs, bookshelves with books, a magazine rack with miniature copies of magazines, including "Jet" and "Ebony", and a book cart. There are also four figures in the room, two female librarians and two young patrons. On the central desk are two name plates for the librarians, Miss Gladys Howard and Mrs. Lillian V. Smith. The timeframe of the installation is c1950s. Smith and Frazier have created numerous dollhouses/models of buildings, many from their childhood in Alexandria. Smith constructs the building and Frazier furnishes their interiors. They use photographs and memories (their own and other residents) to recreate the buildings and furnishings. |
