Rectangular cardboard display board with black vinyl lettering, "MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS OF // AFRICA". The board is mounted with an animal hide drum and a wood and metal thumb piano. Mounted on the piano is a typed caption edged in black tape that begins, "THUMB PIANO / Known by such names as the Sansa, / Libeembi and Imbiri…" and continues to explain how the instrument is played. The board is also mounted with four additional sections of cardboard, one in each corner. In the top left corner is a document entitled, "MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS OF AFRICA", which lists forty-three instruments and their place of origin. In the bottom left corner is a black and white photographic image of a display of instruments. The image is labeled with numbers that correspond to the descriptions in the document above. In the top right corner is a document entitled, "MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS OF THE YORUBA". It lists thirteen instruments and their place of origin with a black and white photographic image of the instrument below on the same document. In the bottom right corner is a mounted black and white photographic image of people in traditional African dress dancing. The caption reads, "Photograph reproduced by permission of the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival". The board is edged in black tape. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic and the back is covered in wood design contact paper. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
