Laura Plantation Slave Quarters |

Description |
Sanabria depicts one of four remaining slave quarters at Laura Plantation, located between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The quarters were built in 1840 to house the increasing enslaved population. By 1861, there were 186 enslaved individuals on the plantation. The antebellum slave quarters included an infirmary, communal kitchens and several water wells. The slave cabins, each housing two families, were close to the sugar mill and cane fields. Following the war, most formerly enslaved people remained in their old quarters until being displaced by lumber company workers in 1895. Laura remained a functioning plantation into the twentieth century. Workers lived in the former slave quarters until 1977. Some of the workers were descendants of the plantation's original enslaved population. This painting is part of Sherry Z. Sanabria's "Sites of Conscience" series. |
