Rectangular cardboard display board mounted with a poster entitled, "The African-American Experience / The Civil War 1861-1865". The poster has a brown and yellow border and the text "THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN EXPERIENCE" is at the top of the poster in a gold colored cartouche. The sub-title, "The Civil War 1861-1865" heads a section of text that lists significant historic events during the Civil War, especially those involving African American troops. The main central image is of an African American Sergeant Major in the Union Army. This image is surrounded by many smaller images depicting President Abraham Lincoln, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, a group of African American men signing up to enlist in the Union Army, an African American soldiers in a hospital bed being tended by an African American nurse, Fort Sumter under attack, three Union soldiers firing their guns, a group of African American soldiers laying down in combat position, and a group of African American Calvary soldiers. The poster is affixed to the board with red, black and green tape in the corner. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic and the back is covered in wood design contact paper. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
