Rectangular foamcore display board mounted with two articles in six black and white documents. The first article is entitled, "The New Blacks in Literature and Fine Arts... ...and in Music and the Performing Arts" and describes the work of African Americans in the arts. It includes black and white photographic images of John O. Killens, John A. Williams, Harold Cruse, William Melvin Kelley, Lerone Bennett, Jr., Kristin Hunter, Eldridge Cleaver, John Henrik Clarke, Ernest J. Gaines, Claude Brown, James Earl Jones, Leslie Uggams, the Negro Ensemble Company, and Alvin Ailey. The second article is entitled, "History and the Arts" and describes the work of African American historians, poets and authors. It includes black and white photographs of John W. Cromwell, George W. Williams, Archibald H. Grimke, Carter C. Woodson, William Stanley Braithwaite, Charles W. Chesnutt, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Henry Ossawa Tanner. The documents are affixed to the board with red and blue tape. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic. Handwritten on the back of the board in black ink is the text, "Fine Arts / + / Music / 1." This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
