Description |
The painting is of Oakley Cabin in Brookeville, Maryland. The cabin was constructed in the 1820s on land that had originally belonged to Revolutionary War hero Colonel Richard Brooke. By the time of the cabin's construction, the farm land was owned by Brooke's grandson, Richard B. Dorsey. In 1836, the farm was sold to Dr. William Bowie Magruder. He had fewer enslaved people, but added two cabins next to the first cabin. Between 1880 and 1920 the three cabins housed twenty-two to thirty-seven people. One resident still lived in Oakley cabin in the mid-1970s. Though heavily damaged by arson in the 1980s, the cabin was restored using nineteenth century techniques, tools, and reclaimed wood from another period structure. It now serves as a living history museum. This painting is part of Sherry Z. Sanabria's "Sites of Conscience" series. |
