Description |
This painting depicts the exterior of a slave cabin on Ossabaw Island, GA. Ossabaw Island, located off the coast of Savannah, Georgia, is a barrier island only accessible by boat. The surviving slave cabins that inspired Sherry Sanabria's work are a reminder of Ossabaw's African American heritage. African American enslaved people lived on the island as early as 1763 when John Morel, Sr. owned Ossabaw. The land was farmed and lumbered using slave labor, though cotton was the dominant crop by the 1800s. The enslaved people living on Ossabaw Island developed a culture combining West African traditions with their experience in the Americas. While many African Americans left Ossabaw after the Civil War, a few families remained until the 1950s. In 1978, the State of Georgia purchased the island, designating it the state's first Heritage Preserve. This painting is part of Sherry Z. Sanabria's "Sites of Conscience" series. |
