Description |
Rectangular cardboard display board constructed from four documents mounted on two layers of cardboard. The first document is a newspaper cutting from The Alexandria Gazette Packet, December 7, 1988, detailing the upcoming rededication ceremony in which the Franklin and Armfield slave pen is to be renamed Freedom House in honor of Henry Bailey. Bailey was sold from the property but later returned to the area a freeman and was the founder of five churches and two schools. His daughter, Annie Rose, 93, was expected to attend the ceremony. The second document is No. 506 from the Documentary Photo Aid series. It is an image of the Price, Birch & Co. slave pen in Alexandria, VA. c.1864. The third document is an extract from Sarah Bradford's "Harriet Tubman: The Moses of her People" and includes an illustration of Harriet Tubman and a short biography. The fourth document is No. 233 from the Documentary Photo Aid series: Slavery. It is an image of Harriet Tubman and a slave sale poster from Charlestown, July 24, 1769. The newspaper cuttings are taped to the cardboard display board that is covered in wood design contact paper. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
