Description |
The painting depicts the interior of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Lincoln, VA. The Grace Methodist Episcopal Church congregation was established in 1872. They initially met in the Lincoln "Colored" School, an African American school built in Lincoln, Virginia in the same year. The church trustees purchased the current church lot in 1884, and worship started at Grace under Reverend John Bean. In "Grace Church #2 Interior", Sanabria places the viewer inside the darkened stone building, which is illuminated through a partially opened double leaf door. The closed door on the right is original to the church, while the open door on the left is a replacement. In 2002, the "Saving Grace Project" was launched to rehabilitate the church. This painting documents the ongoing restoration of Grace Church, which has already stabilized the building and its roof. This painting is part of Sherry Z. Sanabria's "Sites of Conscience" series. |
