Description |
The painting depicts the interior of the historic George Carver School in Purcellville, VA. The historic George Washington Carver School, located in Purcellville, Virginia, was the area's first modern elementary school for African American children. The Virginia government mandated the establishment of public schools in 1870, requiring "that white and colored persons shall not be taught in the same school but in separate schools, under the same regulations as to management, usefulness and efficiency." In 1947, the George Washington Carver School was established in an eight-room brick building. Students filled Carver School's classrooms until 1968. The building was used for storage after the school closed. In 2000, activist Mattie Lassiter, a former Carver School student, recommended the building serve as a senior center. In 2007, it was renovated and reopened as Carver Center. This painting is part of Sherry Z. Sanabria's "Sites of Conscience" series. |
