Description |
This sculpture, "Phoenix Rising Vessel," by Rebecca Kamen, consists of three parts: a base (a), middle section (b), and top (c). The wooden base is constructed of four vertical posts and two sections of horizontal framing around the outside of the posts 6" from the bottom and 6" from the top. It is painted a dark grey. The middle section has three distinct parts. The design is three orange flames sitting vertically on a base of three blueish-grey concentric discs with a stack of smaller blueish-grey concentric discs below forming an inverted cone. The top section of the sculpture is constructed from two free-form, concentric ovals with a hole in the center and painted a bluish grey. A grey rock fits inside the hole and extends below and above the oval rings. There are three slots in the largest ring that allow it to rest on top of the three flames. The sculpture was donated by the artist Rebecca Kamen in memory of Dr. Joseph Windham. Windham was a history profession and assistant dean of liberal arts at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, VA. |
