Rectangular foamcore display board mounted with glossy paper printed with images of photographs and documents relating to Carlton Funn's community relations seminars to the Alexandria Police Department in the summer of 1970, with a brown wood effect background. At the top left of the poster is the City of Alexandria Seal and surrounding this are three photographic images of Funn lecturing to members of the City Police Department. Boards from Funn's collection are visible in the background of the images. Below this are copies of two letters from the City of Alexandria Police Department to Carlton Funn. The letter on the left confirms the scheduling of Funn's sessions and discusses the newspaper publicity of the programs. The letter on the right discusses Funn's appearance as a guest lecturer to the Council of Governments Investigative Subcommittee on August 26, 1970. Between the two letters are three excerpts from newspaper articles about the sessions. Funn had approached the department in an attempt to improve community and police relations in the wake of the murder of 19-year Robin Gibson. Gibson, an African American, who was shot and killed by a white employee at a 7-Eleven in Alexandria, on the May 29th 1970. The incident sparked a week of firebombing and rioting in the City. The display board is constructed from printed glossy poster paper mounted on foamcore. |
