Description |
Rectangular cardboard display board mounted with a poster produced by Pitman Publishing Company, 1968. The poster consists of four black and white drawings and one photographic image on an orange background with the title, "Slave Resistance" along the top edge in white text. Each image has a brief explanatory caption below it. The main image is a drawing depicting Nat Turner's surrender. To the left of this is a photograph of Harriet Tubman. On the lower section of the poster is a drawing of an African American man and child with a caption about literacy; a drawing of Ann Wood and others fleeing capture in a wagon; and a drawing of Margaret Garner and her children with three white men, in which one child is laying on the floor. The caption notes that for some resistance was suicide, infanticide and self-mutilation. The poster is affixed to a black board which is edged in black tape. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic which is taped at the back. The board is marked on the reverse "3". This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
