Rectangular foamcore display board mounted with three articles in six black and white documents. The first article is entitled, "A Brilliant Decade" and describes the work of African Americans in the arts in the 1920s. It includes black and white photographic images of Marian Anderson, R. Nathaniel Dett, Aaron Douglas, Richard B. Harrison, Duke Ellington, and Paul Robeson and Mary Blair. The second article is entitled, "Harlem as a Literacy Mecca" and describes the work of African American authors in Harlem. It includes black and white photographs of Claude McKay, Arna Bontemps, Rudolph Fisher, Countee Cullen, Jean Toomer, and Langston Hughes. The third article is entitled, "Rise to Fame" and consists of ten black and white photographic images of Leontyne Price, Sidney Poitier, Lorraine Hansberry, James Baldwin, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Miles Davis, Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Willie Mays, Mahalia Jackson, Diana Sands and Alan Alda. The documents are affixed to the board with red and blue tape. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic. Handwritten on the back of the board in black ink is the text, "Fine Arts / + / Music / 2." This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
