Springhouse Interior |

Description |
The painting depicts the interior of a springhouse. The location is unknown, but it is possibly in the Leesburg area of Virginia. There are several extant springhouses in the Loudoun County area, including one at Paeonian Springs, which even had a bottling plant to commercially sell the spring water. Often wooden or brick, these structures formed a cover over a natural spring source to keep it clean from animals, foliage and other contamination. This example has a brick lower course with wooden plank construction above. This painting is part of Sherry Z. Sanabria's "Sites of Conscience" series. |
