Articles of agreement between Col. S. R. Lee, Superintendent of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (Freemen's Bureau) and George Seaton to build a two-story school house on Pitt Street, between Franklin and Gibbon Streets, Alexandria, VA, signed by George Seaton, and dated November 8, 1867, and signed by Newton Whitten, Assistant Superintendent. The two-page agreement states that the Freedmen's Bureau will pay $600 for the building of the school which is to be completed by January 10, 1867. The agreement lists in detail the requirements for the exterior and interior of the school. The document is written in pen but has numerous annotations in pencil. The pen details appear to refer to the construction of Snowden School for Boys, on South Pitt Street (between Gibbon and Franklin Streets) which opened in April 1867 and was commonly known as "The Seaton School." However, the pencil annotations alter the location to Alfred Street between Princess and Oronoco Streets, which is the location of the Hallowell School for Girls, which was the second school built by George Seaton and financed by the Freedmen's Bureau which opened in November 1867. |
