Rectangular cardboard display board mounted with an article entitled, "Schools Named For Blacks" from the Afro Magazine Section, dated February 5-9, 1974. The text gives a brief biography of 22 African American men and women. Surrounding the text are 14 black and white photographic images of African American men and women. The images are of: Malcolm X, Carter G. Woodson, James F. Bundy, Benjamin Banneker, George W. Carver, Frederick Douglass, George B. Murphy, John H. Murphy Sr., Paul L. Dunbar, Fannie Coppin, Blanche K. Bruce, Martin Luther King, Harriet Tubman, and Col. Charles Young. Additionally the following have a biographical entry but no image: Henry Highland Garnet, Daniel A. Payne, Jean Point du Sable, Maggie L. Walker, Francis L. Cardozo, John Francis Cook Sr., Archibald Grimke, Emma Frances Geraldine Merritt, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, and Dr. Francis M. Wood. There is no biographical entry for George B. Murphy or John H. Murphy Sr. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic and the back is covered in wood design contact paper. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
