Alexandria Circuit Court document certifying the prior manumission and confirming the free status of Mary and her two children, Sampson and Clara, attested to by Circuit Court clerk Edmund Jennings Lee, in Alexandria, VA, dated November 4, 1823. The document states that Andrew Jamieson and Ninian Anderson dissolved their partnership and Mary was sold at that time for 10 years to Anderson. The document further states that at the same time, i.e. 1791, that Mary's two children, Sampson and Clara, were sold with their mother and were to be freed at the age of 28. This section is also signed by Andrew Jameison. The last section of the document states that the United States Circuit Court of the District of Columbia continued and held for the County of Alexandria officially recognized that Robert Jameison certified to Andrew Jameison's earlier action of freedom for Mary et al. It is signed by Circuit Court clerk Edmund Jennings Lee, in Alexandria, VA, and dated November 4, 1823. The text on the parchment is black and there is evidence that there is writing on the other side of the document. The embellished 19th century frame is painted black and gold on the top. The underside of the frame appears to be stained brown. The frame is nailed together. The document is matted was with a caption below that reads, "Important Freedom Papers for an Alexandria Slave woman named Mary (Ann Stoutley) issued in 1821 (The 260 manumission to be issued from 1790-1860) This certificate of freedom from Andrew Jamison [sic] to Negro Mary is legally a Free Woman."
