Description |
Irregularly shaped cardboard display board mounted with five posters entitled, "Disabled". Each poster consists of a black and white photographic image or drawing of a famous man with a caption below. The posters are for Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Bruce Jenner, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Ludwig van Beethoven. The title is written in two colors with "DIS" in grey and "ABLED" in black so that it reads both as "disabled" and "abled". The top two posters have a black background and the bottom three posters have a white background. The captions read, "EINSTEIN / had a learning disability", "EDISON / Had a learning disability", "BRUCE JENNER / Decathlon Winner, 1976 Olympics / He has a learning disability", "ROOSEVELT / At age 39, his legs were paralyzed by polio. / He became governor of New York state / and was elected president four times", and "Beethoven / was deaf when he conducted his Ninth Symphony". The posters were part of "The Distinguished People with Disabilities Series" produced by the Disabled Student Services Programs, San Jose State University. The board is edged with black tape. The front of the board is covered in grey paper and clear plastic and the back is covered in wood design contact paper. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
