Rectangular cardboard display board mounted with four posters and two copies of an order form for these and other posters available from Associated Publishers. The posters on this board are entitled, "68th National Celebration of Afro-American History: Afro-American Scholars: Leaders, Activists, and Writers", "Leaders", "Activists" and "Writers". Each poster has color drawings of the head and shoulders of African Americans with their names, with the exception of Phillis Wheatley which is a black and white drawing of her sitting and writing at a desk. The poster on the left of the board entitled, "68th National Celebration of Afro-American History: Afro-American Scholars: Leaders, Activists, and Writers" has a green background and a brief biographical caption under each drawing. The drawings are of the following: Phillis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Mary Church Terrell, Ida B. Wells Barnett, W. E. B. Du Bois, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Mary McLeod Bethune, James Weldon Johnson, Carter G. Woodson, Charles H. Wesley, Rayford W. Logan, E. Franklin Frazier, Benjamin E. Mays, Zora Neale Hurston, Benjamin Quarles, Richard Wright, Gwendolyn Brooks, Ralph J. Bunche, Fannie Lou Hamer, James Baldwin, Rosa Parks, and Daisy Bates. The poster at the top right of the board entitled, "Leaders" has a pink background. The drawings are of the following: Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Marcus Garvey, A. Philip Randolph, Roy Wilkins, Whitney Young, Dorothy Height, Martin Luther King Jr., James Farmer, Malcolm X, Andrew Young, John Hope Franklin and Rev. Jesse Jackson. The poster below this on the board entitled, "Activists" has a green background. The drawings are of the following: Mariam Wright Edelman, Benjamin Hooks, Floyd McKissick, Margaret Bush Wilson, John Lewis, Stokely Carmichael, Dick Gregory, Angela Davis, H. Rap Brown, Bobby Seale, Huey Newton and Betty Shabazz. The poster below this on the board entitled, "Writers" has an orange background and the caption includes the name of work by the writer. The drawings are of the following: Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, Arna Bontemps, Countee Cullen, Chester Hines, Ralph Ellison, Maya Angelou, Lerone Bennett, Jr., Lorraine Hansberry, Toni Morrison, Alex Haley, and Alice Walker. The poster was produced by The Associated Publishers. The front of the board is covered in wood design contact paper and has the red vinyl numbers "1993" on the left side. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic which is taped on the back. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
