Rectangular cardboard display board mounted with a poster entitled, "Kente Is More Than Just A Cloth: History and Significance of Ghana's Kente Cloth". At the top of the poster is a description of the history, construction and symbolic significance of Kente cloth. Below this are color photographic images with captions explaining the symbolic meaning of fifty-four different patterns of Kente cloth. Below this are color images of forty-two motifs used on Kente cloths with captions explaining their meaning. Below this is a color image of a section of cloth with captions explaining the different parts of the cloth. There are also color photographic images of people wearing the cloth to illustrate its uses, including an image of Howard University students wearing Kente cloth with their graduation robes. At the bottom of the poster there are explanations of the meaning of the colors used, drawings showing the parts of the machine and tools used in weaving the cloth, and explanations of how to judge the quality of the cloth. There is also a list of acknowledgements and sources used. The poster was researched, designed, and written by Kwaku Ofori-Ansa, Associate Professor of African Art History at Howard University. The poster is affixed to the board with brown tape. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic and the back is covered in wood design contact paper. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
