Menu for The George Mason Hotel, Alexandria, VA, c1940s. The cream-colored card menu is shaped like a coffeepot and has a drawing of an "Aunt Dinah" character in an apron and headscarf, next to the text "Aunt Dinah / WANTS TO KNOW - / 'Does you like / Southern / Fried Chicken / and / French Fried / 'Taters?" The interior is printed with the menu, including the fried chicken and French fried potatoes referenced on the front. There is also a drawing of a man in chef's whites and a quote attributed to the character of "Aunt Dinah" written in what was intended to represent an African American dialect. On the back cover is a listing of "Places of Interest in and Around Alexandria," with includes Gadsby's Tavern. All text and drawings are printed in black. |
