Description |
Collection of 238 loose leaf diary notes written by Lewis Cass White about his military service during the Civil War. Each page is written on the back of the Fort Stevens Lincoln Memorial Association fundraising letter titled 'Fort Stevens and the Lincoln Boulder'. The letter is dated 1915, and its likely White transcribed the diary pages from another diary due to the specificity of their contents. The diary notes start in January 1861 and run through December 1865. White enlisted in the Union army in August of 1861, his notes up to that point contain chores around the home, his teaching duties, people he visited, religious services he attended, and the weather. Once White is enlisted his notes detail his military training, troop movements, his daily life as a soldier, relgious services, and the weather. Once honorably discharged from the army in July 1865, White notes places he visits, daily life, work as a foreman, religious services, teaching at a contraband school, and the weather. There are no notes for the year 1864. |
