Description |
Large cotton quilt with 54 squares (arranged in nine rows of six) decorated with imagery on the theme of civil rights. Each 10" square has a decorated white center and a colorful fabric border. The white squares are decorated with a variety of hand-drawn pictures in paint or marker pens, handwritten text, and ironed-on photographs of events in the Civil Rights movement. The entire quilt has a border in a fabric with a pattern of multi-colored circles and black butterflies. The quilt is backed in a blue fabric and has a pocket for a rod along the top edge. The quilt was made by members of the Alexandria Volunteer Bureau's Youth Program. The coordinator for the quilt project was Jamila Mahdi and the technical advisor was Madeline Shepperson, owner of Quilt-N-Stuff. The quilt was displayed in the Vola Lawson Lobby of Alexandria City Hall. |
