Description |
Wooden soil collection vessel for Benjamin Thomas, made by students at Jefferson Houston IB School, 2022. The vessel has a wooden frame and legs and two plastic side panels and two interior dividers. Each of the four legs is mounted with a caster that can be positioned directly under the leg to allow the vessel to move or rotated to the side of the leg so that the vessel is stationary. Front wooden panel of the vessel is engraved with the text, "Benjamin Thomas / August 8, 1899 / Died by lynching in Alexandria, VA / Fairfax St and King St" This vessel was used to contain soil related to one of Alexandria's documented victims of lynching Benjamin Thomas. The vessel was used during a soil collection ceremony during which soil was taken from the main chamber and placed into glass jars. The vessels were made by the following students, Chris, Zakiyah, Livi, Alejandra, Taliyah, Micahyah and Mai, under the direction of their teacher, Nicole Reidinger. |
