Rectangular foamcore display board mounted with ten documents. The first and second documents are entitled, "The Space Age" and the text describes the work of the African American scientists and mathematicians behind Commander Shepard's space flight and the role of African American newspapers and magazines, such as Jet and Ebony, in reporting African American achievement. They include images of Professor John Hope Franklin, Nece Harper, John H. Johnson, Charles F. Harris, and Ernest Dunbar. The board also contains a black and white photographic image of Ronald McNair and part of a book chapter about him, and a page on George Washington Carver which includes two images of Carver at work. The remaining five documents are copies taken from a publication about the Black Heritage Series United States postal stamps and consists of a black and white image of the stamp, a brief biography and the stamp release date. The stamps included are for George Washington Carver, Benjamin Banneker, Percy Lavon Julian, Ernest E. Just, Madam C. J. Walker, and Jan Matzeliger. The documents are affixed to the board with red tape and the board is edged with blue tape. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic which is taped at the back. Handwritten on the back in black ink is the text, "Science / Tech. / 3." This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
