Rectangular cardboard display board mounted with a poster produced by Pitman Publishing Company, 1968. The poster consists of four black and white drawings and a photographic image on an orange background with the title, "Civil War" along the top edge in white text. Each image has a brief explanatory caption below it. The main image is a drawing depicting men, woman and soldiers, some on horseback in an outdoor scene with trees and a house in the background. The caption describes that black troops liberated enslaved people in North Carolina. Below this is a drawing of a battle scene with African American soldiers from the First South Carolina Volunteers, dogs and mounted Confederate troops. To the right of this is a drawing depicting the Fort Pillow Massacre with Confederate troops killing African American Union soldiers. On the third row is a photographic image of Major Martin R. Delany. To the right of this is a drawing of African American Charlestonians greeting the 55th Massachusetts Regiment as they liberated the city. The poster is affixed to a black board which is edged in black tape. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic which is taped at the back. The board is marked on the reverse "5". This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
