The two articles on the left and right of the board describe Funn's seminars to the Alexandria Police Department in the summer of 1970. Funn had approached the department in an attempt to improve community and police relations in the wake of the murder of 19-year Robin Gibson. Gibson, an African American, who was shot and killed by a white employee at a 7-Eleven in Alexandria, on the May 29th 1970. The incident sparked a week of firebombing and rioting in the City. The front of the rectangular display board is covered in clear plastic affixed with tape on the back of the board. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
