Description |
Stereograph showing a group of Union soldiers and a horse and wagon standing by a tree in front of 1315 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA. A painted sign on the building reads, "Price, Birch & Co. Dealers in Slaves." The building is flanked by two high brick walls and the roof of a structure is visible to the left of the 1315 building. The stereograph was printed by Taylor & Huntington from an original negative taken between 1861-1865. The two photographs are mounted on orange card printed with the black text, "1861 The War For the Union. 1865 / 1861 Photographic War History. 1865," and the caption, "2296. Slave Pen, Alexandria, Va. / [FOR DESCRIPTION OF THIS VIEW SEE THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS CARD.]" Handwritten above the images is the text, "No 139." On the reverse in black print on a brownish background is a description of the image, commentary, and brief history of the "1861 - Photographic History - 1865" series. The caption text reads, "2296. Slave Pen, Alexandria, Va. / Exterior view of the famous, or rather infamous slave pen. People of this generation can hardly make it seem possible that such an "institution" was ever tolerated under the stars and stripes, in this "land of the free." Read the inscription on that sign over the door: 'Price, Birch & Co. Dealers in Slaves.' " |
