a) Letter to the editor of the Washington Times from Wesley George of Co. E, 139th Pennsylvania Regiment, Wheaton's Brigade telling the editor he's enclosed a letter from his mess-mate Sam Gray who gives his account of the Battle of Fort Stevens and that it might be useful for a newspaper story for the upcoming 47th anniversary of the battle. b-d) Letter from Sam Gray to Wesley George in which he describes his experience arriving with the rest of his company in Washington to help defend Fort Stevens, the reception of DC citizens, the comrades who were killed or wounded, and the skirmishes he participated in. e) Newspaper clipping from the Washington Times July 12, 1911 titled 'Veterans Refight Old Battle Here' details Sam Gray's letter to Wesley George, and talks about how Wesley George, Sylvester Hildebrand, and H.G. Owens walked with the author around Fort Stevens and shared their experiences and pointed out places where comrades died or skirmishes took place. |
