Sotterley Slave Quarter Stairs |

Description |
The painting depicts stairs in the interior of a slave cabin at Sotterley Plantation in Hollywood, MD. There were originally five to ten slave cabins scattered across the landscape of Sotterley Plantation; however, only one remains standing. The Sotterley slave cabin was better constructed than most wooden slave quarters found across the American South. Rather than using unfinished logs, the Sotterley carpenter employed sawed pine planks and three different joinery techniques: keyed notches at the end of each plank, projecting rods that pin each plank together, and exterior wall buttresses. Although this cabin is larger than the average antebellum slave quarter, it would have felt incredibly small for the five or more adults who originally lived inside. This painting is part of Sherry Z. Sanabria's "Sites of Conscience" series. |
