Rectangular cardboard display board mounted with three pages of an article entitled, "The Story of Cinque: Slave Turned Pirate Who Fought for Freedom" by Franklynn Peterson. The article describes Senge Pieh's (also known as Joseph Cinque) life in Sierra Leone, his kidnapping and transportation to Havana, Cuba on the ship La Facora and his overtaking of the vessel "The Amistad" en route to the United States. The article also details Pieh's trials in New York and at the Supreme Court and his eventual release and return to Sierra Leone. The article includes two black and white drawings of the mutiny on board Amistad, one of Pieh's trial and one drawing of the "Am I not a man and a brother" image. The front of the board is covered in clear plastic and the back is covered in black paper. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
