Description/Scope and Content |
The archive consists of material documenting the life and career of community activist Annie Beatrice Bailey Rose. The archive consists of material documenting the life and career of community activist Annie Beatrice Bailey Rose. The collection is largely the creation of Annie B. Rose; however, it also contains posthumous material collected by her nephew, Floyd Kye (donor). Additionally, the collection contains material relating to Annie B. Rose's family, including her father, Lewis Henry Bailey, and her aunt, Jennie Dean, and the institutions they founded, Ebenezer Baptist Church in Occoquan (Bailey) and the Manassas Industrial School (Dean). The collection also includes material indicated in an earlier finding aid to be from Mable Smith. This material has been organized separately from the main collection. The collection contains letters, documents, programs, notecards, and notebooks relating to numerous organizations and causes that Annie B. Rose was involved with. Throughout the collection there is a strong thread of her devout Christian faith and her commitment to serve others. Upon detailed review of the collection for digitization in 2023, it was noted that the original physical organization of the material had separated pages for single documents, letters from envelopes, and duplicate copies of the same programs into different folders/boxes. Additionally, some material had not been fully processed and recorded. In consultation with the original organizer of the material, the City Archivist, and the Director of the African American History Division, the archive was reorganized to reunite this dispersed material. As previously noted, the Mable Smith material was not incorporated into the main collection. The collection is largely organized by theme. However, the following material is organized by medium: albums/scrapbooks, photographs, speeches, notecards, and notebooks. |
