Photograph of Annie B. Rose along with members of the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW), and the students who participated in the Virginia State Association of Elks oratorical contest, 1953. Rose is second from the left in the photograph. The photographer is Burke. Research indicates that the oratorical contest took place in Petersburg, VA during the annual Virginia State Association of the Elks session. The two individuals shaking hands are Robert Johnson, the grand exalted ruler of the Elks, and Raleigh Davenport, the winner of the contest that year. The individuals on the far right are Joseph F. Simmons, president of the Virginia State Association of the Elks and Margaret Minor, retired state president of the Virginia Association of Daughter Elks. The two female students and the man at the far left of the picture are unidentified. |
