Description |
Bi-fold rectangular cardboard display board mounted on one side with "Save The Children" and on the other with "Famous Black Americans". The title "SAVE THE CHILDREN" is applied in white card lettering at the top of one of the panels. The remainder of this panel and the adjoining panel are mounted with eight posters from the Documentary Photo Aids (DPA) series entitled, "Teaching Experiences". Each poster consists of color photographic images with an explanatory caption below. The images depict African American students in the classroom and the captions are comments by a white teacher of her experiences in teaching young children. Two of the posters on the left side are loose behind the plastic. On the other side of the board is the title, "FAMOUS BLACK AMERICANS" in white text on a black drawing of the United States of America. The remainder of this panel and the adjoining panel are mounted with sixteen color drawings of famous African Americans in ovals with their names and life-dates in a yellow rectangle below each image. The drawings are of: Crispus Attucks, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Matthew Alexander Henson, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, Dr. Charles Richard Drew, Brigadier General Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., Asa Philip Randolph, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, Jackie Robinson, Marian Anderson, Ralph Bunche, Thurgood Marshall, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The documents are affixed to a black background and the boards are edged in wood design contact paper. On one side this contact paper forms a hinge between the two panels of cardboard and on the other they are joined with black tape. All sides of the board are covered in clear plastic. The top and bottom of the board are edged in black tape. This display board was created and used by Carlton A. Funn Sr. as part of his exhibition, "The History and Culture of Minorities", later named "National / International Cultural Exhibits ("NICE"). |
